I had to add a few inches into mine as it was more of an armpit bag. Sat far too high up. It's better now. I'm guessing various bits of kit would have been adjusted /modified locally  a little to suit by the people actually using it.

The first set of repro haversacks we made after discovering the dimensions listed in a schedule of contracts via Frank Packer were made with a short strap. Owing to  transcription mistake if I recall correctly.

I have an open mind on alterations. Haversacks, like canteens, were camp equipment issued from the Storemaster General's stock. As such, they were supposed to be returned after the period of service expired (service in Georgian parlance meaning duty done in the immediate face of an enemy). So the Storemaster took exception to alterations being made to 'loaned' equipment. However, we have seen that canteens were marked in various ways, and even inscribed, so there is some grounds for proposing alterations in haversack straps to fit men.

The more elegant solution would be to farm those of a more gigantic stature out to the Guards, and swap them for miniature, agile fellows, but in this case I think we ought to make an exception for Dines.
