as for the rusting answer thank you, i supose it makes sense, although the line infantry didnt brown their muskets,  do they not suffer rusting problems,

Both browned and polished barrels will suffer from soldiers gold but the polished ones a lot more, with a browned barrel you can just wipe it clean, with a polished one it takes some cleaning if left for too long as the rust will start eating into the metal.

A soldier carried a package of brick-dust with him to keep his firearm shiney and, I believe, with the more enthusiastic 'spit-and-polish' minded soldier, resulted in wearing the barrel dangerously thin.

Rifle off to get drilled and proofed,home visit today,said it takes a week to ten days from visit to license,hmm touch and go for Cosmeston.....
