Felt Cones

Bit specialised this but if you don't ask you don't get!
Anyone got a source for good thick felt cones or hoods for shako/cap making?
I used to get good ones from Baxter Hart and Abraham but they have changed supplier and the 110g ones they now supply seem thinner and less robust.  90g cones are even more lightweight.

I think the period ones were made from denser thicker stuff - shellac just soaks through the modern thin felt cones and ruins the finish.

Clive from the Coldstream's gets his from http://www.kopka.de/

150g cones which he says are a delight to block. Not cheap though. If you think about putting in an order do let me know I may want some.

Thanks John
I will email them and see what their prices and postage is like.
Clive did mention he was getting cones from Germany but I forgot the name.
I still have to use up my old stock before I can buy new but I was disappointed with the last lot.

I've got some of the Baxter Hart one's to use up. OK for belgics but I struggle to get the depth for a stovepipe.

John - yes the old ones are a tough pull for a stovepipe - the 110g cones they now stock are a lot easier to block - plenty of stretch but I find them easy to spoil with shellac unless extremely careful - little at a time and often.
I would be happy to swap one of the new for one of the old if you want to experiment sometime.

Thanks for the offer. I'll take you up on that. Apparently kopka sell hoods made by a Czech company www.tonak.cz so you might like to try them.

Parkinfabrics.co.UK. website seems to have problems at the moment but might be worth a try.
